Growing Through Every Level: William’s Leadership Journey 

Ready to Progress 

When William Mainala first stepped into the health and social care sector back in 2019, he was a support worker with a clear ambition: to grow, to understand his practice more deeply, and to build a meaningful career in leadership. That ambition led him to begin his learning journey with Itec, starting with the Level 2 Health & Social Care qualification. 

From the very beginning, William recognised that structured learning could strengthen his confidence and give him the tools he needed to support people more effectively. Each qualification became a stepping stone both academically and professionally. 

A Journey of Steady Growth 

As William progressed through Level 3 and Level 4, his career moved forward in parallel. The knowledge he gained translated directly into his day‑to‑day practice, helping him understand the complexities of care, leadership, and service delivery. 

Today, he stands proudly as a Deputy Manager in residential care – a role he reached through determination, experience, and the confidence built through each stage of his apprenticeship journey. 

Support That Makes a Difference 

William describes his experience with Itec as incredible. Throughout his qualifications, he met assessors who challenged him, encouraged him, and helped him see new perspectives within his work. Their guidance didn’t just help him complete tasks, it shaped the leader he has become. 

He reflects on their impact with genuine gratitude: 

“They enlightened me in a number of areas… I’m forever thankful.” 

This support became especially important during his Level 5 Leadership & Management qualification a stage he describes as transformative. 

Turning Learning into Practice 

One of William’s proudest achievements during Level 5 was designing and implementing an arts and crafts project within his workplace. What began as a qualification task has now become an ongoing intervention in the service, a real example of learning shaping practice and improving the lives of the people he supports. 

For William, this is what leadership in care is about: using knowledge to create positive change. 

Graduation and a New Chapter 

Standing at his graduation, William felt a deep sense of achievement. The journey was long, challenging at times, and full of growth, but reaching the end brought pride, relief, and excitement for what comes next. 

“It’s a journey which at times seemed like it would never end… but now this is the end of it, and I am so much happy.” 

A Future Built on Purpose 

William’s apprenticeship journey shows the power of commitment, structured learning, and genuine passion for care. From Level 2 support worker to Level 5 leader, he has built a career grounded in compassion, knowledge, and continuous development. 

His message to Itec is simple and heartfelt: 

“Diolch yn fawr.” 

And his story stands as a reminder of what apprenticeships can offer: progression, confidence, and a pathway to leadership in a sector that truly changes lives.
