“It’s Changed My Life”: The Support and Encouragement That Transformed One Young Learner’s Journey

“I was about to give up, but it’s changed my life.” How Itec staff Supported and Inspired a Young Talented Learner

Melissa Summers first joined Itec Skills and Employment on the Engagement strand, attending the centre weekly to develop her skills and complete topics within the programme curriculum.

With the support and guidance of the Itec team, Melissa grew in confidence and ability. Centre staff helped secure a placement for her at a local primary school, where she has thrived and adapted successfully to her role.

Through regular check-ins and ongoing support from the Itec team, Melissa continued to progress in the workplace. Her employer recognised her potential and referred her to a Level 1 Assessor, enabling her to begin working towards qualifications in Health and Social Care, Early Years and Childcare.

Melissa and the Itec team have worked closely together to build her confidence and support her in managing her anxiety. As a result, she has successfully completed the Agored Cymru Level 1 Award in Introduction to Health and Social Care (Adults, Children and Young People), Early Years and Childcare. Melissa regularly reflects on her practice within the school during centre days with her assessor.

Reflecting on her journey, Melissa said: “I’m really glad I gave it a go. I was about to give up, but it’s changed my life.”

Melissa has also achieved remarkable success in the Skills Competition sector. She has progressed to become a UK finalist and will now compete in the National Finals at Cardiff and Vale College in November as part of the Foundation Skills Health and Social Care Competition.
