Overcoming learning barriers with tailored support: Lily’s journey

Lily joined Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme on the Advancement strand at our Bridgend centre directly from school after completing her GCSEs. One of Lily’s early barriers to learning was information processing.

The Itec staff worked closely with Lily, using tailored support to provide her with strategies to overcome learning barriers, supporting her to identify key words and focus on essential concepts. With the support from Itec staff, Lily significantly improved her comprehension and confidence. As a result, Lily successfully passed her City & Guilds Level 1 Introductory Award in Employability Skills (QCF) and a Level 1 Customer Service qualification with a First-Class result.

The Itec staff supported Lily’s eager interest to explore a range of industries and discover the direction that best suited her interests. The programme facilitated several placements, helping Lily to gain great experience. The placements included Ty Nant Nursing Home, The Bridge MPS community hub, and the administrative department at Itec Skills.

As Lily commented: “I enjoy working with people, which has enhanced my communication skills and confidence. I know my strengths are in community engagement and customer services.”

The placement settings allowed Lily to develop her strengths and gain greater clarity about her future aspirations.

Her journey demonstrates not only her commitment to learning but also her growth, confidence, and emerging sense of direction as she continues to build her career.
