Kyan Smith – Community Impact Through Engagement and Advancement

When Kyan Smith joined Itec in July 2025 on the Engagement Strand of the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme, he was a young person searching for direction. Expelled from school at the age of 14 and carrying a challenging personal history, Kyan had reached a point where traditional learning environments no longer worked for him. What he needed was a fresh start, a holistic approach, and a pathway that recognised his strengths rather than his struggles.

From the outset, it was clear that Kyan thrived through hands on, practical experience rather than classroom-based learning. With a strong interest in horticulture and landscaping emerging during his initial assessment, Itec’s team worked to find an environment where he could flourish. In August 2025, Kyan was placed at Cynon Valley Organic Adventures – a social enterprise set on a vibrant 5 acre site featuring rivers, wet woodlands, orchards, a pond, polytunnels, and rich wildlife habitats. The organisation offers inclusive, accredited learning alongside volunteer placements, community activities, and wellbeing-focused opportunities.

The change of environment had an immediate impact. After a settling-in period, Kyan began to thrive, quickly demonstrating commitment, reliability, and a growing sense of purpose. His progress saw him transition onto the Advancement strand, where he continued to build confidence and skills while working toward his long-term goals.
Since joining Itec, Kyan has achieved a series of qualifications that reflect both his hard work and his willingness to embrace new challenges. These include Introduction to Horticulture, Community Forestry, and the CSCS card, with Emergency First Aid scheduled next. Each milestone has moved him closer to sustainable employment within the land-based and environmental sectors.

Kyan’s ambition continues to grow. On his 18th birthday, he will enrol on the Energy Persons Ticket course in an opportunity that, once completed, will secure him guaranteed employment with the National Grid. In the meantime, Cynon Valley Organic Adventures is supporting him further by utilising his organisational strengths and keen eye for detail, ensuring he stays on track and gains maximum benefit from his work experience.

Kyan’s journey is a testament to what can be achieved when the right support, environment, and opportunities come together. He is a credit to himself, to Itec, and to Cynon Valley Organic Adventures, demonstrating resilience, growth, and a promising future ahead.
