Foundations for the Future: Tia Catley’s story
Seventeen months ago, Tia Catley joined Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme in Merthyr Tydfil with a clear goal: to make a difference in her local community. From the start, she knew she had a passion for working with young people and wanted to develop the skills needed for a meaningful career. However, taking the first step felt daunting, and she knew she needed support to navigate the journey ahead. Fortunately, Youth Tutor James Jones was there to guide and encourage her every step of the way.
James provided Tia with the support she needed to overcome challenges and build the necessary skills for a role working with young people. With his encouragement, Tia began to believe in her potential, gaining confidence as she progressed.
During her time at Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ centre in Merthyr Tydfil, Tia successfully earned four qualifications, including Employability Skills, Application of Number, and a Customer Service QCF Level 1. She is now close to completing her Level 1 qualification in Health and Social Care. Her dedication and professionalism have laid the foundation for a bright future, equipping her with the skills required for her dream role.
Recognising Tia’s impressive growth, James leveraged his connections with The Willows youth team in Troedyrhiw to arrange a trial shift for her. Tia’s passion for working with young people shone through, and she excelled in her trial, earning her a full-time placement in a role dedicated to supporting young people.
Today, Tia is thriving in her role, making a real difference in the lives of young people while continuing to grow as a professional. Her friendly and inclusive approach creates a welcoming environment where everyone feels accepted. From planning activities to preparing meals, she embraces the variety of tasks her role offers. Reflecting on her journey, Tia shares, “Without the support from Itec and my placement team, I’d still be going around in circles. Now, I’ve found my passion and a clear path for my future.”
Itec extends its gratitude to the youth team at The Willows for providing Tia with the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in a role that will shape her future. Shane Munkley, Senior Youth Worker at The Willows, shares his appreciation: “Tia is an incredible addition to our team, making a real impact on the young people she supports. It’s always a pleasure working with her, and we can’t wait to see her continue to flourish in the future.”
Tia’s story is a testament to how determination, paired with the right support, can pave the way for success. This is the very mission of the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme—to help individuals build a strong foundation and thrive in their careers.
