Orbis Education & Care with Itec Skills

Building Compassionate Care Professionals at Orbis Education & Care

Orbis Education & Care provides specialist education and residential care for children and young adults with learning disabilities, autism, and increasingly complex social, emotional and mental health needs. As more children are excluded from mainstream education and the long-term impact of trauma is better understood, Orbis has evolved its provision to meet these changing needs.

“The needs now, certainly in education, are linked to so many children being excluded from mainstream school due to behavior and the lack of understanding of the impact of trauma,” explains Debra Durham, Head of Learning and Development at Orbis.

In order to ensure that staff are equipped to support young people with complex needs, Orbis places a strong emphasis on developing a skilled and compassionate workforce. Currently over 70 members of staff are completing Health and Social Care apprenticeships at Levels 2 to 5 with Itec Skills and Employment.

Apprenticeships allow learning to take place directly in practice, helping staff to develop technical skills and empathy. Observation-based assessment and reflective learning align closely with Orbis’ trauma-focused and person-centred approach, supporting staff to understand behavior as communication rather than conflict.

The partnership between Orbis and Itec has grown into a reliable relationship based on consistent provision and positive experiences for learners. Clear communication, accessible learning materials, and flexible assessment methods ensure that learners feel supported and confident throughout their programmes. Apprenticeships also support progression at Orbis, offering clear career paths and helping staff to consider care as a long-term profession.

Many learners progress through several levels, building confidence and ability as they grow in their roles. Reflecting on the partnership, Debra describes Itec as “responsive, professional, engaged, compassionate and intelligent.”

Together, Orbis and Itec continue to develop confident care professionals who make a meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people every day.
