Level 1 Award in Fitness and Physical Activity

Itec is delighted to be working with LA Training, who recently welcomed four Jobs Growth Wales+ learners onto the Level 1 Award in Fitness and Physical Activity. The course is based at the Fitness Quarter in the Red Dragon Centre and spans six sessions that combine classroom learning with practical experience in a real gym setting. Each learner also receives complimentary membership for the duration of the course, which allows them to practise their skills and grow their confidence as they learn.

Throughout the course, learners explore the structure and function of the human body and how it responds to exercise. They learn how to follow a personal exercise programme using the recognised principles of fitness, and they are introduced to the responsibilities involved in working as a fitness instructor. The course also gives them a clearer understanding of the wider fitness industry and the career opportunities available. There is an emphasis on safety when leading exercise sessions and on developing a balanced approach to nutrition and healthy living.

The learners have been supported by Domonic Ham, who visited the Itec Cardiff centre where the JGW+ programme is delivered, to introduce the opportunity and has since guided the group through their training. Domonic’s encouragement and expertise have helped the learners engage fully with the course and understand how their new knowledge links to their career ambitions. All four learners are aiming for future roles within the fitness industry, and this experience has given them the confidence, insight, and practical foundation they need to move forward.

Several learners have shared how impactful the course has been. Kimberly explained that it has built her confidence and expanded her understanding of fitness and wellbeing. Shannon described how Itec has helped her find a clear direction for her future and how the support she has received has reduced her anxiety and opened the door to new experiences. Oliver commented that the course has strengthened his ambition to become a personal trainer and that Itec’s support has enabled him to access opportunities that match his goals.

Domonic expressed how enjoyable it has been to deliver the programme to the Itec cohort and how engaged the learners have been throughout. He noted the positive changes already visible in their communication skills, confidence and knowledge, and he looks forward to seeing their continued development as they progress.

This partnership with LA Training provides learners with more than a qualification. It offers genuine experience within a professional gym environment, guidance from an experienced instructor, and a valuable introduction to the fitness industry. For these learners, it represents a meaningful start to their future careers and a chance to build the foundations of a path they are excited to follow.
