Kian Rees X Llantrisant Golf Club
Finding His Path and Growing in Confidence Toward an Apprenticeship
Kian Rees, a learner on the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme with Itec Skills and Employment, has shown resilience and personal growth on his journey into employment.
Kian joined the programme as a shy and reserved individual, having faced a number of challenges both in the centre setting and during previous placements. He initially struggled with confidence and experienced several setbacks in sectors such as construction and warehousing, which left him uncertain about his future career direction.
With the guidance of his Employability Officer, James Loveridge, and strong support from his family and Centre staff, Kian found renewed determination. James worked closely with him throughout his journey, ensuring he was placed in a role suited to his personality and interests. His ongoing support and belief in Kian’s potential played a crucial role in helping him stay motivated and move forward. Despite challenges, Kian persevered and remained committed to finding the right opportunity—one that would allow him to thrive.
That opportunity came at Llantrisant Golf Club, where Kian began a work placement as a greenkeeper. Under the mentorship of the team, particularly course manager Matt, Kian found his stride. The outdoor, practical nature of the work, along with the supportive environment, proved to be the perfect fit for him.
Kian has since gone from strength to strength, showing reliability, growing confidence, and a clear passion for the role. He’s impressed the team so much that Llantrisant Golf Club has decided to offer him an Apprenticeship in Greenkeeping, starting this August.
“Kian has come on leaps and bounds since starting with us. He’s fitted into the team brilliantly, and you can see how much pride he takes in his work. We’re really pleased to have him with us long-term,” says Matthew Yates, Llantrisant Golf Club.
Kian’s journey is a powerful reminder that success doesn’t always come immediately and that finding the right environment can make all the difference. He’s turned things around and is now on a clear path to a rewarding green career.
“Kian’s role as a greenkeeper contributes directly to environmentally responsible land management, aligning with the Welsh Government’s ambition for a growing green economy. Not only should he be proud of himself but also understand everything he does has value to a Greener Cymru” says Employability Officer, James Loveridge.
Kian’s progress has not gone unnoticed. He was recently nominated for Itec Skills and Employment’s JGW+ Learner of the Year Awards, a well-deserved recognition of how far he’s come.
Kian’s story is one of resilience and determination. From a quiet, uncertain young man to a confident and committed apprentice-to-be, Kian Rees has every reason to be proud of his personal and career growth. With his apprenticeship now just around the corner, the future looks bright… and green.
