Harley Jones X Trinant Primary School

how self-belief and support from Itec helps springboard learner through qualifications

When Harley Jones first joined the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme at Itec Skills and Employment, he was filled with uncertainty and anxiety about his future. Unsure of which career path to follow, he approached the opportunity with caution, carrying the additional weight of a heart condition and physical disabilities. However, from the very beginning, it was clear that Harley possessed a quiet strength and a determination to overcome the barriers in front of him.

The team at Itec Skills and Employment recognised the importance of providing Harley with personalised and consistent support. Aware of the challenges he faced due to his health and physical disabilities, the team worked closely with him to create a safe, nurturing environment where he could build confidence and explore his interests without pressure.

Despite his initial apprehensions, Harley embraced the support of the Itec team and gradually found his footing. Our support included regular one-to-one mentoring sessions, tailored career guidance, and emotional encouragement to help him navigate his uncertainty. The Itec JGW+ Employability Officers actively collaborated with Harley to identify a placement that suited both his aspirations and abilities.

Through persistence and a growing sense of self-belief, Harley secured a placement at Trinant Primary School; a milestone that marked a turning point in both his confidence and his career journey. The Itec team remained in close contact throughout his time at Trinant Primary School to ensure his experience was positive and empowering.

Courtney Phillips, Learner Coach at Itec Skills and Employment said, “We worked with the school to make any necessary adjustments to support Harley’s needs, promoting an inclusive and welcoming space where he could thrive. Throughout, we celebrated his progress – no matter how small – reinforcing his strengths and helping him develop a sense of self-belief that has become the foundation of his success.”

In the school setting, Harley has flourished. He is now working towards completing his Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, demonstrating commitment, professionalism, and an eagerness to grow. His placement has not only enhanced his practical skills but has also allowed his natural warmth and positivity to shine through.

Harley is often described as a ray of sunshine. His presence lights up any room he walks into, bringing joy to both staff and students alike. He has built strong friendships with his peers and established meaningful professional relationships with colleagues at the school. His kind nature, combined with his growing expertise, makes him a valued member of the educational community.

“Watching Harley grow into a confident, capable young professional has been a privilege,” said Courtney. “As staff, we are proud to have walked alongside him on this journey and remain committed to supporting him as he continues to build a bright and meaningful future.”

The entire team at Itec is incredibly proud of Harley’s achievements. His journey is a testament to resilience, personal growth, and the power of self-belief. Harley continues to inspire those around him and serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when courage meets opportunity.
