Cynthia Obi
‘Shwmae changed everything’ – Finding connection through Cymraeg in Care
When Cynthia Obi began her Health and Social Care apprenticeship, Welsh was all around her in Swansea—on signs, in media, in the community—but it wasn’t a language she spoke. That changed when she entered the care field as an apprentice with Itec and discovered how language could deeply impact person-centred support.
Many service users, particularly older adults and those with dementia, felt most at ease speaking Welsh. Cynthia realised that language could be the key to unlocking trust and identity, especially in vulnerable moments. She began learning and using simple Welsh phrases—Shwmae, Sut wyt ti heddiw?, Diolch yn fawr—and noticed immediate, heartfelt responses from the people she supported.
“Starting the apprenticeship highlighted the importance of Welsh in promoting inclusive, person-centred care,” Cynthia explains. “Even simple greetings make people feel seen and respected.”
One powerful moment shaped her journey. At a residential care home, Cynthia greeted an elderly man in Welsh. Previously withdrawn, he lit up at her words and began sharing stories about his youth, rugby, and hymns. A senior carer later told her, “That’s the most he’s spoken all week.”
This moment transformed how Cynthia saw her role — not just as a caregiver, but as a bridge between culture, language, and emotional wellbeing.
Cynthia said “My Welsh language journey has been deeply shaped by the empathy and support of tutors, assessors, and Itec staff.” Itec has created a culture where bilingualism is welcomed and apprentices like Cynthia have been trusted to use Welsh naturally in practice, with colleagues and patients, helping them grow confidence without fear.
Looking ahead, Cynthia aims to continue to deepen her understanding of Welsh Language and culture, create new more accessible resources and advocate for bilingual care that honours trust and dignity.
Cynthia’s journey shows that even a few words in Welsh can transform care and the apprentice experience. For her, and for others like her, language isn’t a barrier—it’s a powerful tool for connection.
