Itec was delighted to sponsor the Welsh Refugee Council annual Nation of Sanctuary Awards, an inspiring event that honours the strength, resilience and achievements of refugees and people seeking sanctuary across Wales.
Since 2019, the awards have provided a platform to recognise individuals who have rebuilt their lives and made meaningful contributions to their communities. Their stories challenge stereotypes and inspire hope throughout Wales.
Reflecting on this year’s event, the Welsh Refugee Council said:
“This year, these awards feel more important than ever. Against a backdrop of uncertainty and change in the immigration and asylum system, we have seen incredible courage, solidarity and compassion. Across Wales, communities have stood together to uphold the values of sanctuary, even when it has been difficult. These awards shine a light on those who continue to choose humanity. They are not just a celebration, they are a reminder of who we are and who we aspire to be.”
Julie Dyer, Head of Operations at Itec, presented the Inspiring Young Person Award. In her address, she said:
“We are proud to be an independent Welsh organisation with over 44 years of experience supporting people to achieve their goals. We work across Wales delivering training, employability programmes and skills development opportunities, including Apprenticeships and Jobs Growth Wales Plus. Our vision is a world where individuals and businesses can thrive whatever the future may bring. Our mission is to empower learners to reach their full potential and help them take their futures into their own hands.”
The Inspiring Young Person Award recognises sanctuary seekers aged 16 to 30 whose talents, ambition and determination are making a positive impact in their communities. It celebrates young people who show strong potential, inspire others and contribute meaningfully to society.
Julie added:
“We are incredibly proud to sponsor this award because supporting and celebrating young people’s resilience, determination and potential is at the heart of what we do. Every day we see how the right support and opportunity can transform lives. For refugees and those seeking sanctuary, we understand the challenges of rebuilding life in a new country, and we are committed to removing barriers to education, training and employment.”
This year’s winner, Ali Otman, demonstrated these qualities. After arriving in the United Kingdom in 2023, Ali quickly began supporting others while building his own future. He worked hard to learn English and now plays a key role in leading a youth group in Swansea for other sanctuary seekers.
The Welsh Refugee Council said:
“Ali uses his lived experience to help young people access opportunities, from football teams to training and university visits. He builds trust, encourages confidence and helps others feel they have a voice and a place.”
At Itec, we remain committed to ensuring that everyone has access to inclusive, high quality opportunities and feels safe, supported and empowered to thrive. Inclusion, empowerment and a passion for learning and growth guide everything we do.
It is a privilege to celebrate such remarkable young people and their inspiring journeys.
