Celebrating Resilience, Ambition & Growth at Itec’s First-Ever JGW+ Learner Awards

Itec’s hosts very first JGW+ Learner Awards to celebrate the inspiring journeys, achievements, and impact of learners—and the incredible support of our employer partners. The awards were split into two events: the East region ceremony was hosted at Cornerstone Church Cardiff and the West at Swansea.com Stadium.
From Outstanding Progress to Peer Recognition, these eight awards honoured the resilience, creativity, and determination that shine throughout our JGW+ programme.

Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ Operations Manager, Adele Hughes said, “This week marked a truly special milestone as we hosted our very first JGW+ Learner Award Ceremony. The positivity and passion shown through each learner nomination was nothing short of inspiring. Seeing our learners celebrated, parents beaming with pride, and our team’s hard work recognised made it an unforgettable event.

“Out of over 388 nominations from across Wales, the number of incredible stories we received was overwhelming. Narrowing that down to our finalists was no easy task—and to every learner recognised, you’ve done something truly remarkable.”

Eight learner awards were given at the two regional award ceremonies at the beginning of May, reflecting the values of resilience, ambition, and growth which Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ teams and learners strive for every day.
The awards were:
• Resilience & Determination Award
• Innovation & Creativity Award
• Inspirational Learner
• Peer Recognition Award
• Teamwork Award
• Tutor’s Choice Award
• Outstanding Progress Award
• Employer Achievement Award

As well as to learner families and friends, the event invitation was extended to the incredible partners of the Itec centres who provide placements for learners to develop their skills on the job.

The Employer Recognition Award observed the immense value these companies bring to learner experience and education.
Adele Hughes said, “It’s been a true privilege to share this space with such inspiring learners, dedicated staff, supportive employers, and proud family members. You’ve been recognised not just for what you’ve achieved, but for who you are—resilient, hardworking, kind, and determined.

“To our employer partners—thank you for being champions of young people. You don’t just open doors—you hold them open, offer a hand through, and give learners the confidence to walk through them with purpose. We literally couldn’t do what we do without you.”

The ceremonies were made possible thanks to the Llywodraeth Cymru / Welsh Government that subsidises the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme. In addition to the awards, the money funds a diverse range of wellbeing activities and support for learners on the programme.

Along with an electrifying carnival themed party with games, tickets, prizes and food stalls, the events featured guest speaker Dan Newman from the mental health, motivational and wellness community, BALDILOCKS.

Having already visited centres and engaged with learners on wellbeing earlier in the year, Dan said this on how to keep positive mental health in the world of work:
“I wish I had Itec when I was younger because it would have kept me on a certain path that I took so long to figure out on my own. Whilst you’re on a pathway in your life trying to figure out what to do, just make sure what you choose serves your values. You have shown up for yourselves and your committed to your own progress by being on the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme. That’s amazing, keep that going. If ever you feel you are getting lost ask yourself ‘what is my purpose for being here and doing this.’ don’t disengage, don’t get depressed, don’t get isolated. Make a choice to find your purpose. When you find you purpose your prospects, and your potential is going to skyrocket. Find that place in spaces where you are of service to others.”

Itec’s Strategy Director, Catherine Roberts-Straw, was thrilled to present the awards in the at the East/Central region ceremony, She said, “It was a true pleasure to announce the awards at our Cardiff ceremony, an event that was both inspiring and uplifting. The celebratory atmosphere was felt throughout—from the vibrant carnival-themed activities that set the tone at the start to the heartfelt moment at the end when a learner took the stage to personally thank our tutors for their support on her journey. Hearing the nominees share how being an Itec learner has transformed their lives was deeply humbling and made me incredibly proud of the dedicated team we have here at Itec.”
