Tom Lewis X Cadno Lounge
Advancing Confidence and Career
One of the biggest challenges Gen Z faces as they enter the workforce is a lack of confidence, further exacerbated by limited job experience—an issue worsened by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. For 18-year-old Tom Lewis, these hurdles loomed large as he began navigating a career in hospitality.
Tom chose to enrol on to Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ (JGW+) programme which allowed him to work towards qualifications for entering the hospitality industry as well as receiving 1-2-1 wellbeing support, life-skills and career advice along the way. Itec’s JGW+ programme is tailored to help young people like Tom receive the support they need to begin pursuing their dream career.
During his time at Itec’s JGW+ learning centre in Neath, Tom has shown progress with the help of Youth Tutor Hannah Walker and employability Officer Gareth Williams, who helped Tom break down barriers and supported him with his anxiety. He has since completed a barista course and his Food Hygiene Level 2 and is currently working towards his Customer Service and Hospitality Level 1. Tom was able to go to an interview with a placement that is local from Itec’s Neath Job Growth Wales+ centre. Gareth supported Tom with his interview and helped him to successfully secure his placement at Cadno Lounge in Neath.
Cadno Lounge said, “We are in full support of JGW+ programme, it’s a really great opportunity for young adults in the community and our business.” The team at Itec would like to thank Cadno Lounge for supporting young people and helping them achieve their goals. “
Tom has now been at this placement for 5 months which he has stated he ‘really enjoys’. His confidence has grown along with his communication skills which has helped him to make some new friends. His health and happiness have also improved because of his new lifestyle.
