Scarlett Bowditch
Confidence and Community: Scarlett’s story
At 16, Scarlett Bowditch’s journey took a transformative turn after leaving school at 15 due to struggles with the environment and her confidence. Uncertain about her future, Scarlett joined Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme at the Aberdare centre. With the support of her tutors, she discovered a passion for hospitality and began a placement at the local YMCA, marking a positive shift in her life’s trajectory.
Scarlett’s placement at the YMCA significantly boosted her confidence and pushed her beyond her comfort zone. She is currently completing her Level 1 qualification in Hospitality and Catering, excelling in the fast-paced café environment thanks to the guidance of Youth Tutor Specialist Paul Evans. Upon finishing her qualification, Scarlett will have the opportunity to further develop her skills and career.
Scarlett’s dedication and growth were recognised when she received the Cynon Taff Young People Community Award, presented by local MP Beth Winters. This prestigious award highlights her hard work and personal development. Staff at Itec’s Aberdare centre commend Scarlett for her genuine passion and excellent customer service. She has become an invaluable member of the YMCA team, contributing to a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
Scarlett’s advice to aspiring learners is clear: “I wouldn’t wait around. Being able to gain experience and work on yourself with a supportive placement while also learning has been amazing.”
Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme supports young people like Scarlett in building workplace skills and gaining valuable experience through personalized support and collaborations with local employers.
