Recognising World Mental Health Day with RedDot365: Prioritising JGW+ Learners Wellbeing at Itec

On World Mental Health Day, Itec Skills is proud to join forces with RedDot365 to highlight the importance of mental health in education and work-based learning. At Itec Skills, we have been dedicated to supporting the holistic development of learners through our Jobs Growth Wales Plus (JGW+) programme, which focuses on equipping 16-19-year-olds with the skills, qualifications, and confidence needed for employment.

We believe that learner wellbeing is at the core of success, both academically and professionally. Research consistently shows that mental and emotional wellbeing is essential for positive learning outcomes. This is why, alongside traditional skills training, we’ve made wellbeing a key focus in our programmes—using innovative tools like RedDot365 to track and support mental health across a diverse demographic of learners.

A Year of Wellbeing Initiatives

Over the past year, we’ve implemented a wide range of wellbeing activities designed to foster mental, emotional, and social resilience. From wellbeing workshops on stress management and emotional resilience to physical activity programmes such as yoga and team sports, our learners have reported noticeable improvements in relaxation, energy levels, and social engagement. Our peer support networks have further strengthened these efforts, encouraging learners to build meaningful connections in an inclusive environment.

Measurable Impact: Data Speaks Volumes

The integration of RedDot365 has allowed us to gather critical data on how our interventions are shaping learners’ perceptions of their wellbeing. For instance, learners participating in wellbeing activities reported increased positivity about their future, with over 60% of learners expressing optimism. Relaxation levels improved significantly, especially among male learners.

Work Readiness and Confidence: Building a Brighter Future

One of the primary goals of the JGW+ programme is to prepare learners for the workforce. Wellbeing activities have been instrumental in increasing confidence and work readiness. This year, 27.9% of male learners and 19.3% of female learners reported feeling ready for work, marking a substantial improvement from previous years. Additionally, we observed increased energy levels, with 37.9% of males and 13.2% of females reporting higher motivation and vitality—key factors in achieving career success.

A Focus on Inclusion and Diversity

Our wellbeing approach is rooted in inclusivity, acknowledging the different social, cultural, and gender-based needs of our learners. We’ve tailored support for specific demographics, using data-driven insights to address varied challenges. For example, gender-based analysis has revealed that male learners tend to report more consistent positivity and energy levels, while female learners exhibit more fluctuation, emphasizing the need for targeted emotional support.

Looking Ahead: Continuing the Journey of Wellbeing

As we mark World Mental Health Day, we reaffirm our commitment to creating an environment where mental health is not just recognised but actively supported. Through our continued partnership with RedDot365, we aim to expand our wellbeing initiatives, ensuring that every learner receives the mental, emotional, and social support they need to thrive in their personal and professional lives.

Mental health is not just a day—it’s a daily practice. By putting wellbeing at the heart of our training programmes, we are not only preparing learners for jobs but equipping them with the tools to lead healthier, more balanced lives.
