Itec Learners Shine at Wales Skills Competition with Outstanding Achievements

Three of Itec’s learners on the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme attended the prestigious Skills Competition Wales, a national competition collaboration between Inspiring Skills and Welsh Government, this year hosted at the University of Wales in Newport.

Selected for their exceptional computer skills, Finnely Clements and Charlie Acteson competed against participants from other colleges and training providers across Wales in the Inclusive Skills for Information Technology competition. This event tested their abilities in various office software tasks, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email usage, and image creation.

Despite some challenging moments, both learners felt confident about their performance. The competition also gave them a valuable taste of university life, helping them consider their future educational paths after Itec.

In addition to the competition, they enjoyed exploring Newport, even though the weather wasn’t ideal. It was a great opportunity for them to experience something new and reflect on their future goals.

Finnely was recognised in the digital awards ceremony on Wednesday as Highly Commended and Best in Region in the Digital, Business and Creative division for Inclusive Skills: IT Software Solutions for Business.

Itec’s Specialist Route Youth Tutor, Jamie Brennan said, “We are incredibly proud of their [Finnely and Charlie] achievements and look forward to seeing where their skills and determination will take them next.”

Meanwhile learner Tamzin Smith was recognised for Highly Commended and Best in Region in the Health, Hospitality and Lifestyle division for her Inclusive Skills in Child Care.

Specialist Youth Tutor Natasha Loye said, “She has been an amazing learner to work with and really stepped out of her comfort zone by attending the competition and even drove herself to the location which was a challenge in itself for her.”

Tamzin has almost completed her Level1 qualification which Natasha said will be ‘another cherry on the cake for her’. We are looking forward to seeing where Tamzin’s talents take her.
